Zverev Faces Auger-Aliassime in ATP Finals Clash

Preamble

The occupational hazards of tournament pool play mean at this point of the ATP World Tour Finals fans frequently find themselves confused, hastily looking for a computing device and trying to work out the mind-boggling permutations of qualification. But tonight’s match between Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, mercifully, is straightforward. It’s a straight shootout: the winner secures a final four battle against Carlos Alcaraz at this year-end tournament; the loser is eliminated.

Zverev is the predicted winner for this: the elite athlete is the player with greater achievements, has claimed the title at this tournament on two prior occasions and holds the advantage in their personal record with six victories against three defeats, winning both their previous matches on an enclosed hard court.

But … this is the surface on which the Canadian has won the bulk of his trophies, he is in great form after his compelling comeback against Ben Shelton on midweek and he eliminated the German in the US Open third round in August. Plus, the playing speed is higher in the host city than at Flushing Meadows, which is even more beneficial in AA’s favor.

Should Zverev be cautious, similar to his performance against the Italian, and Auger-Aliassime takes it to the German with his effective service game and bold strategy, it could well be the North American athlete – the one-time phenom who was previously positioned before the younger champions to replace the legendary trio – who earns the questionable privilege of facing the top-ranked player the next day.

The match starts: at about 8.30pm local time, 7.30pm GMT.
