The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner Unilever prevented the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he plans to independently develop this new flavor within a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.
This latest announcement escalates the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders maintain how Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company against "maintaining its activist principles".
Mr. Cohen revealed through social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, that closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that originally established several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
The founder revealed how he plans to develop other ice cream flavors focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, following many years with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence had been undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen commented how "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill the social mission, the values that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
