Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Selection in English Test Series Squad

England have chosen a twelve-player selection just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a surprise place.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion indicates that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spinner.

Both pace bowlers are included in the selected squad, showing there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s condition.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to miss out if the spinner enters the final team.

Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers

The England coach had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted five past matches.

During these matches, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin.

Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.

On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable decision.

Spin Options Considered

Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the lower order.

But McCullum has opted to stick with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
