A massive bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the new year.
The winning offer for the 243kg fish came from the company of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages outlets domestically and internationally.
"The first tuna brings good luck," commented the company president, a regular participant at the annual first sale.
Referred to as the Tuna King, this industry figure is famous for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.
After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "taken aback at the amount," stating, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price escalated rapidly."
This latest purchase surpasses his own historic purchases:
Despite once commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to surpass his own record once again.
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally associated with exorbitant prices. Last year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which stated the fish would be served at its eateries across Japan.
The intense activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.
The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly sliced up for customers at the winner's sushi establishments immediately after the auction was finished.
"I feel like I've started the year in a positive way after eating something so auspicious as the year gets underway," shared one elated patron.
