New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
The quarterback's response pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' remarkable comeback win over the New York. The coach remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the player and his coach.
