Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

Corporate Departure
The economist declared he would withdraw from public duties after legislative body released his regular messages with the financier

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became widely known.

The economist commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the chance to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await observing their development".

The former Harvard president, who formerly led Harvard University, announced on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The newly public emails demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 arrest for alleged human trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected Summers' choice to resign.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the Board," the organization commented.

Congressional Action

This development comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch agreed on this week to pass a legislation that would compel the US justice department to make public its documents on Epstein.

The bill will subsequently head to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has said he expects to sign the measure, after reversing his view on the issue following objections from his followers.

Message Details

A group of Epstein-related emails released by the Congressional committee days ago included numerous high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The messages showed that the economist and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often attempting to link the academic to influential international personalities.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were made available with the wider community, the former official said he took "full responsibility for my misguided choice to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he desired "to rebuild trust and repair bonds with the persons most important to me".

Professional History

Summers occupied senior posts under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He presided over the university from five years and is still a professor there. When declaring his withdrawal from public commitments previously on this week, he said he would continue his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive policy institute in DC where he was a prominent member, verified that the economist was ceased to be associated with the organization.

The former official became part of the leadership of the AI company, which develops the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
