For the Store Clerk Who Left Me Absolutely Wordless – My Hat's Off to You

The scene was a weekend morning, and I was grumpy enough, topping off my mother's vehicle. This was a typical gas station that also functions as a grocery store, which often leads of waiting behind customers carrying goods of pricey provisions. It's an awful situation to unfold when your only desire is to get gasoline and leave. Dreadful.

Fourth in line I stood in the waiting line. A single cashier operating, a female attendant. There was something unusual to her presence. Once the slowpoke at the first position had completed payment for his purchases, his pastry, and his box of eggs, I could have sworn I heard the cashier wish him to have a great day. Odd. Perhaps I’d misheard, or perhaps she spoke and meant it ironically. I pondered if perhaps she was a comrade in the war on delays, sharing my contempt for those who delay simple fuel-buyers including me.

I moved up, now third in line. The person ahead of the queue discharged her fuel-only transaction with commendable speed. And there it was again: “Wishing you a marvelous day.” In fact, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. A stateside native? At this location? She had the accent, and no British person says to others a wonderful day, or even just a nice day. Very rare. It's uncommon to find people from America visiting this town, least of all working in petrol stations or elsewhere.

I was second now. After an elderly lady engaged in a right old battle with her basket, her food items, her wallet and her loyalty card. The process dragged on. After she finished, the woman also was wished to have a fantastic day. Yes, American for sure. I might have verified it by making a witty remark at the cashier, to observe that reaction when they look at you, unsmilingly, and reply with genuine earnest: “That’s really funny.” But I couldn’t think of anything hilarious to utter.

In the end, I embraced the genuine warmth – or an impersonation of it, that equates to the same thing – as she gazed me right in the eye, piercingly, and told me a wonderful day. My spirits lifted. A positive experience.
