Drone Strike on United Nations Facility in War-Torn Sudan Claims Six Peacekeepers

A unmanned attack struck a UN facility in war-torn Sudan on Saturday, leading to the deaths of six peacekeepers, according to a announcement.

The strike impacted a UN outpost in the city of Kadugli, located in the central region of Kordofan.

8 additional personnel were injured in the strike. Each of the casualties are from Bangladesh, deployed with the UN peacekeeping contingent in Abyei.

“Assaults against UN personnel may constitute war crimes under international law,” the statement said, calling for the perpetrators for the “inexcusable” attack to be brought to justice.

Military Accuses Fighter Group

The national army attributed the incident on the RSF fighters, a prominent militia that has been fighting with the government troops for control of the country for more than two years.

The attack “demonstrates the subversive approach of the rebel militia and its supporters,” the army said in a communication.

Context of the Disputed Region

The resource-abundant Abyei is a claimed region between Sudan and South Sudan, and the UN mission has been operating there since 2011, when the south became independent from Sudan.

Appeals for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan were also expressed to allow “a broad, inclusive and locally driven dialogue” to address the war.

Country Engulfed in Chaos Since 2023

Sudan was thrown into chaos in April 2023 when a power struggle between the military and the RSF escalated into full-scale combat in the national capital and elsewhere the country.

  • The fighting has taken over 40,000 lives, a figure rights groups regard as a major underestimate.
  • Recent combat has been concentrated in Kordofan, notably since fighters seized El Fasher.
  • The crisis has destroyed urban areas and has been marked by atrocities, including systematic rape and ethnically motivated killings.
  • These crimes have been called international crimes by the UN and rights groups.
  • The conflict has also precipitated the world’s worst humanitarian disaster and forced parts of the country into famine.
