The daughter of previous South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related accusations at the beginning of her court case in the port city of Durban city.

The defendant, 43 years old, is being charged over comments she posted on digital networks four years ago during fatal unrest in South Africa that followed the apprehension of her father.

A period of anarchy in several parts of the country in the summer of 2021, including looting and arson, caused at least three hundred killed and caused damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).

She has been charged of encouraging this violence and confronts accusations of provocation to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.

Background of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were centered in the provinces of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal province and were triggered by the ex-leader's apprehension for disobeying a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an investigation into claims of graft while he was holding office.

She has repeatedly rejected the charges against her, with her lawyer previously labelling the prosecution's evidence as unsubstantiated.

She has also frequently stated the charges against her were an bid to settle political scores with her dad after he started his own political organization and ran against the African National Congress.

Support and Legal Defense

This was supported by the foundation, which said the proceedings was an "power abuse" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and kinship persecution" against the previous head of state and his relatives.

A few of followers from her group, the political party, appeared outside the judicial building, while her father and other organization officials were present at the proceedings inside.

The defense has argued that the testimony presented by prosecutors is insufficient and fails to provide compelling grounds for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Case

  • Online comments from the past form the foundation of the prosecution's argument
  • Fatal demonstrations in July 2021 resulted in substantial casualties and monetary damage
  • The individual on trial confronts multiple charges of encouragement to violence
  • Legal hearings are projected to proceed for several weeks

The trial continues as the prosecution and defense present their evidence before the court in what is anticipated to be a closely watched court case with major political ramifications for South Africa.
