Three police officers were killed and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence close to the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three officers killed served in the Carabinieri military police.
Two individuals got detained at the site and one more individual who escaped following the blast was located not long after. All three have been admitted to the hospital.
The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area revealed the property left as a pile of rubble.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.
The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the residence was facing an removal notice due to debts accrued by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member triggered the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he explained.
Petrol bombs were also discovered at the property, the Interior Minister stated.
The wounded by the explosion included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.
According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.
He believed the blast had taken place on a story above the access point and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being opened”.
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors told reporters, noting that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
