An individual profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.

A particular user, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436,000 from a initial bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

A bill introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
