US automobile safety regulators have started an investigation into Tesla vehicles featuring the full self-driving technology due to traffic-safety violations following multiple accidents.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration declared that the electric carmaker's autonomous driving feature, which requires motorists to stay alert and intervene if needed, had caused car behavior that breached traffic safety laws”.
This preliminary evaluation by the NHTSA marks the first step before potentially seeking a recall of the cars if the agency concludes they present a danger to public safety.
The agency stated it had received accounts of 2.88 million Tesla vehicles driving through red lights and moving in the incorrect way during lane changes while operating the system.
NHTSA stated it has six documented cases in which a Tesla car, using FSD activated, “approached an junction with a red light, continued to drive into the intersection against the red light and was later part of a collision with other cars in the intersection”.
The authority reported that four accidents had resulted in one or more injuries.
The NHTSA announced it has found 18 reports and one media report claiming that Tesla vehicles, driving through an intersection with FSD active, did not stay stopped for the entire time of a red traffic signal, failed to stop fully, or did not properly recognize and display the proper traffic signal state in the car's display”.
Several reporters also claimed that FSD “failed to give alerts of the technology's planned actions as the vehicle was approaching a red traffic signal”.
The full self-driving system, which is more advanced than its Autopilot system, has been being examined by NHTSA for twelve months.
In October 2024, the agency started an investigation into over two million Tesla vehicles using FSD after four reported collisions in conditions of reduced visibility, such as sun glare, mist or airborne dust. One of these collisions, in 2023, was fatal.
Tesla's website states that FSD is “designed for operation by a fully attentive motorist, who has their hands on the wheel and is ready to take over at any moment. While these features are engineered to improve over time, the presently active functions do not render the vehicle autonomous.”
