During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
